What is the difference between a wireless modem & wireless router?

We're getting swift to switch to cable internet which will be hooked up through our desktop. FYI: it does not have wireless connectivity.

I'd like the gift to use the internet on my laptop (which is ready for wireless connections), but I'm not sure what all
