Can I use ethernet splitter from modem to my imac and bluray dvd or need a router?

Earthlink(modem) & LG (dvdplayer) told me to use ethernet splitter. When I googled ethernet splitters there were some comments that I requisite a router instead?

Ethernet splitters exists, the biggest problem it only allows one item to access the internet at a period. I provided an amazon link so you can read the comments about it.

I would persuade to buy a wireless n router instead so you can share your internet's use
