Here in Britain, ISPs will only ever give you speedtouch 330 USB ADSL modems (however, they've started to give out wireless routers in place of now). Is it possible to connect to Xbox Live with a USB modem?

You cannot use a USB Modem on the Xbox 360 since it will not allow the connection that way. You can purchase the Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter ( http://www.xbox.com/en-US/munitions/x/xbo x360wirelessnetadapter/default.htm ) and then ask your ISP for that wireless router you mentioned
