What's the difference between each Lexmark Ink Cartridges according to number?

I have a sufficiently old scanner/printer and my friend recommended the cartridge #24 but what's the modification between all of the other numbers that I see in the stores?

Dependable numbers only work in certain printers. Some are compatible with others. Lexmark is not the only guests who does this. HP and Epson do as well.
