Does the Apple Nike + iPod sensor work in shoes other than the Nike + shoe?

I bought an iPod ignite from someone who apparently bought the Nike + iPod sport kit because the software is downloaded in the app pages but i don't have the sensor so i was debating about buying it severally but i don't want to if it doesn't work with normal running shoes.

You can get rid of the software in the settings

I about it might, by the looks of it it's just a little button

apparently Nike+ shoes have a scarcely slot of chamber of some sort in the bottom just for the sensor
