how do you hook up a 6 volt battery as backup for a solar powered fountain pump?

How do you another completely it up? What supplies do I need? How do I go about doing this?

Seedy and cheerful way would be via a diode in series with the battery. Once the solar supply dropped below 5.3V the battery would take over.
